What exactly is PR & why do I need it?

One of the hardest things about working in public relations is getting people to fully understand not only the importance of PR, but what PR actually is. Sure we all have heard of PR, but how many of us can truly explain what it is & what a PR company does—my guess is not many.  Here at CultureHype we live, breathe & sleep PR—it’s who we are and what we do. So for us, it is extremely important that we share with you all what exactly PR is & why you or your business may need it.

What is PR?

PRSA defines public relations as “a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations & their publics.”

Now that is a more extreme way to describe PR, so to simply put it PR is the process that connects you to the public. It’s what gets clients on TV, in the papers, on the web or radio. It utilizes social media to promote business’ news, articles, stories, or engage with its customers on a personal level. It helps clients develop strategies to build relationships with the media & public. And yes at times, there is some party or event planning.

So why do I need it?

Now that you know exactly what PR is and some of the different aspects that make up public relations, you might wonder, “Do I actually need this”? And the truth is if you or your company have a story to be heard (which believe me everyone does) then PR is for you. PR is a matter of telling your story to the public and if you don’t, someone else will, or worse no one will ever hear it.

Good PR can only lead to further your success and help you reach your goals. Think of us as storytellers, brand ambassadors or "super fans".  Not many people think that there's a person responsible for your new favorite band who played SNL, or that book review - but there's PR everywhere!
